Category:

Description

Amoxil is a penicillin antibiotic, a drug that is effective in fighting bacteria. This drug is used in the treatment of various kinds of bacterial infections, including pneumonia, tonsillitis, bronchitis, gonorrhea and infections of the urinary tract, skin, nose, eat and throat.

When used alongside Biaxin, another antibiotic, Amoxil is used in the treatment of stomach ulcers that result from an Helicobacter pylori infection. This combination is sometimes used together with lansoprazole, an acid reducer.

When using Amoxil, ensure you always get your prescription refilled before the end of the previous prescription. If you are using other medications, continue using them as instructed by the doctor. If you are using other medications for bacterial infections and they prove ineffective, inform your doctor.

Before Using Amoxil

Avoid Amoxil if you have allergic reactions when taking it or when taking any other penicillin antibiotic. Also, talk to your doctor about the safe use of Amoxil in the case of the following conditions:

  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Mononucleosis
  • Asthma
  • A history of diarrhea when using antibiotics
  • Drug allergies

If this drug has been prescribed for gonorrhea, ask your doctor also to test you for syphilis or any other STI. Amoxil is not known to cause harm to an unborn baby. However, if you get pregnant in the course of treatment, inform your doctor.

Amoxil is known to cause birth control pills to be less effective. While taking Amoxil, use non-hormonal birth control methods. For breastfeeding mothers, Amoxil is not recommended as it passes into breast milk and can cause harm to the nursing baby.

How to Use Amoxil

When using Amoxil, strictly follow the instructions of your doctor. Also, pay close attention to the prescription details on the prescription label. Stick to the prescribed dose and do not increase or decrease it without being instructed by your doctor to do so. For the best results, your doctor may adjust your dose accordingly.

Remember to take Amoxil at the same time each day, with or without food. In the case of the liquid form, measure out the dose with the provided special measuring spoon. If you do not have one, ask your pharmacist to provide you with one.

In the case of the chewable tablet, chew the tablet before swallowing it. While using this drug, blood tests should be carried out frequently to ensure your kidney and liver are functioning properly.

If you miss a dose of Amoxil, take it when you remember. However, skip the dose if it is already time for the next dose. An overdose of this drug could prove dangerous. Seek emergency medical attention if you suspect an overdose.
